You know those spam e-mails you get sometimes where they just pick random words for the subject? I got one while I was away entitled "squid warmonger." Sweet!

At any rate, back from my mini-jaunt to New York. It was a pretty good time. Got to spend some more time with Steph which, unfortunately, is going to be the last time that's going to happen for quite some time, as she is soon to depart this country for foreign shores. We did the usual lounging around and it was quite a nice time. I will miss her much.

Also during my brief stay, I managed to grab my buddy Paul for an hour or so for a quick drink and some catching up, which is good stuff. He's this guy that I used to work with back in the day, back when I temped for a while in Jersey City. Damn, that was a long time ago. Other than that, it was pretty much just chilling at the Castillo. James and I got to get a little chess in, which was nice; it's been quite a while since that happened. We both got in some upsets; each of us had a win that was quite the tactical vitory after being down on material. And then there was a game in the middle where I totally botched the beginning, limped along for a while, and then finally surrendered, seeing no way out. I like chess. I miss chess. I also suck at chess. :) My endgame is still in the crapper, which is unfortunate. I also still find the game...frustrating, I guess, is the word. It's funny, too...after so much poker, it's weird to come out a loser at something and not be able to go, "Eh...just bad luck, I guess." ;) There was also a bit of video gaming; mostly Strikers, and also some Double Dash when Kthrin swung by to...not eat. Caught some crap-ass movies on TV, and that was basically it. A nice visit, frankly. :) Although, I am sad to report that I missed a meet-and-greet with MC Frontalot, which I could have made if I had decided to stay an extra day. Doh!

My return trip hit a snag or two. Firstly, I was my usual lazy-ass self and didn't get out of the City until far later than I'd intended. (Part of this also had to do with me deciding to catch The Sentinel on my way out.) As a result, I didn't spend any time in Atlantic City before returning home, which I usually do, but just grabbed a quick bite of packaged sandwich from the gas station, and then hopped on the bus back home. Then I fell asleep. It's something I try not to do, since the bus generally blows through my little podunk with very little fanfare, though in the past it hasn't been a problem, as I've managed to wake up on time to disembark every time previous to this one. On this particular occasion, I sadly came back to consciousness only to realize that, although I recognized my surroundings, they were not describing a location between Atlantic City and my mom's place. Argh! The good news: I only overshot by two bus stops. The bad news: I overshot by three towns.

I jumped off the bus at the next available opportunity, a Dunkin Donuts out in Rio Grande. This being the middle of the night in a fairly sparsely populated area of South Jersey, there wasn't going to be another bus going my way for quite some time, and knowing I was surely not that far from home, I decided I'd try to walk it. It took about two hours, and all I really thought about the whole thing was, thank God this was a short visit to New York and that I had packed light. :P When I first got off the bus, in my haze, I had thought that the next bus was probably something like two hours away from showing up, and that was the thought that got me to start hoofing it back. While it's true that if I had missed the bus in Atlantic City, my next opportunity to catch one would be two hours later, but since I was now in the middle of the route somewhere, it turns out I could have caught one only about an hour later. (Strangely, though, due to late-night bus logic, if I had made this mistake an hour later, the next bus wouldn't be coming around for three hours. Whatever.) I knew at the time I decided to start walking that it was something of a risk: maybe I'd beat the bus back and maybe I wouldn't. But I thought I might have the escape hatch of starting to walk back and then catching a bus the rest of the way if it caught up with me. Enter the dearth of bus stops between where I was and where I wanted to go. I passed one whole stop on the way back home, which I guess must suck for anyone who lives in between. As the final missed connection in this story, a bus did pass me on the way back, and it turns out that at the one stop I did pass, I probably could have waited there for like fifteen or twenty minutes to pick up that ride back for the rest of the way, which would have cut my trip down by, I don't know...maybe 3 or 4 miles. But, whatever...the walk wasn't too bad, and I'm glad I made it, anyway. That'll teach me to catch some z's on the ride home.

Oh, and yes, I actually did have a bus schedule on me at the time. For some reason, this fact did not occur to me until I was a town or two already on my way. Way to go. :P

So there ya go...after all that and a good night's sleep, I'm finally back home and catching up on my missed online time. I think I'll try to stay busy at the casino the rest of this week, and then I'll be watching the place for Momz while she's away this weekend, so I hope to take advantage of having the house to myself by lazing about in it, probably playing video games and almost certainly eating too much. And that, as they say, is that. Party on, everybody.

Remember when people used to say, "Smell ya later?" Think the Fresh Prince was responsible for that? I was just thinking about that recently. Those were good times...we should start saying that again.

Anyway, I pussied out of the casino today, opting instead to laze around the house and make a day of general catching up and stuff. Plus I think I might have to curtail tomorrow's session as well so I can see part two of that House episode that was on tonight. At any rate, I figured I'd get going on this Interview Meme.
