It never rains, but it pours
Jan. 17th, 2007 01:12 pmSo I'm in the car with Momz yesterday on the way out to go shopping, and I get a phone call. It's about another dealing job I applied for last month, and they want to bring me in for an interview. Wow, man. Being the extreme scheduling genius that I am, I agreed to an interview this Friday morning. Geez! Am I, like, retarded? Well, I wanted to see if I could function on sleep dep; I guess this'll be where I find out. On the upside, by this weekend I should have no trouble rearranging my sleep schedule to something more suited to working swing shift. On the downside, I'll only be working a few more nights after that. :) Still...this should be pretty interesting week, I guess. The real fun is going to be figuring out how to dress for a job interview on Friday morning, and then be able to switch to work uniform for a shift on Friday night. Ordinarily this wouldn't pose such a problem, but suddenly I find myself unable to cart a bag around, so I have nowhere to stash the clothes. I think I really gotta figure that shit out before the week is over.
Anyway, that aside, yesterday went well. I now have new shoes, and I got them with a minimum of fuss, which is always nice. I just got some nice, simple, black running shoes, so they can carry me around comfortably over long distances, but they also masquerade well enough as shoes suitable for work, too. Dig it. I paid for them with the gift cards I got for participating in that gambling study. That was actually a weird experience. I felt like...it was as close as I've ever come to real, useful bartering. I mean...it's not like I actually did anything, but still...I felt like I was basically being paid in goods, not in cash. And it goods I actually need...like this is something fairly basic and key to my modern world survival. It felt like a pretty neat and tidy transaction, frankly. Plus, with this purchase I got the chance to take a phone survey about how the service was at the place and blah blah blah. In return for that survey, I get a little coupon for my next purchase. Between that coupon and the credit I still have left on the gift card, I'm well on my way to a new pair of pants as well! What a parlay!
I know there was a time in my life where I would have scoffed at such excitement over penny-pinching...but that was a time before I was living on instant ramen and multivitamins.
In any case, just a few short (read: interminably long) hours from now, and I'll be on my way to my inaugural (for realz, this time) dealing gig. I'm gettin' the nerves, I think. Think good thoughts, everybody! Due to the frantic nature of my schedule in the next, oh, three days or so, I'm not sure I'll be able to report back about it for a little while, but...rest assured I'll be giving it my all. Onward!
