Wouldn't this be something great to do in your spare time?

Um, am I the only one kind of nervous about this idea? It's like saying, "yeah, we know that the little boy with his finger in the dam is the only thing keeping it from all crumbling down and obliterating everyone in the valley, but theoretically, we should be able to contain it for a bit while he goes to have a nap." I mean, really...they THINK they can control it? They THINK it will have no effect or be "safe" for our own universe? Do we have ANOTHER universe, that I don't know about, that we can move to, if they should happen to fuck this one up by creating a new one in the middle of it? That this new one would have its own space-time is extremely nail-bitingly disturbing. Besides, as far as I know, nobody has been able to even prove the existence and/or stability of any type of wormhole whatsoever, so them saying that it should create a wormhole that connects it to us and then it should seal itself up again when it's done creating is like...okay I'm going to take this screwdriver and bore a nonexistent hole in the wall in order to stick a bomb in that hole, and when the bomb goes off, it's going to seal up the hole in the wall, too, and be entirely self-contained. Come ON. I'd like to know the actual physics/science behind these claims and this idea.

...And if Hawking suggests starting to edge away from this project, wheeling his chair down the ramp and out of the building, I'm going with him.

I think scientists should be required to invent the tricorder, Mr. Data, and the deflector dish (cuz I don't think a problem exists that can't be solved with a tachyon beam), before they are allowed to make mini-universes (no matter how cute they might be).
